NAMI
Metro Educational
Programs The
members of the Education Committee bring programs to families, those
diagnosed with serious mental illnesses and the public.
The
FAMILIES IN ACTION Program The
goals of the FIA Program are to help families understand mental illness
and how it affects the family. The
program is designed to help families learn how to cope with stress,
understand community resources, recognize symptoms, communicate better
and support the road to recovery. The
overall objective is to promote and support a Healthy, Happy and
Independent life. The
ten-week workshop is a weekly, two hour evening session presented in the
fall and spring of each year. The
family members who facilitate the program are people who love and care
for a family member who has been diagnosed with a serious mental
illness. The
IN OUR OWN VOICE Program In this program, consumers (those who have been diagnosed with a serious mental illness themselves)
are the presenters. They educate the public regarding their experiences,
insights, and the challenges they face. One goal is to lessen the
negative public perception of what a mental illness is and is not.
A second goal is to provide other consumers with role models who
provide hope for their own recovery.
In Our Own Voice is presented wherever there is a need to educate
the public regarding serious mental illnesses.
